Castlebar's Richie Feeney (pictured) took away the premier prize at Friday night's Mayo News/O'Neills Club Stars Award when he was presented with the Willie McNeely Perpetual Trophy for Player of the Year.
Feeney put in a series of outstanding performances in the full-back line for Mitchels all year as they made it to the county final, where they lost to Ballintubber. Players such as Aidan Kilcoyne, Cillian O'Connor and Marty McNicholas all enjoyed little latitude off Feeney and he was the clear winner in the public vote on www.mayonews.ie and Feeney's selection was a very popular one on the night.
In the Intermediate grade Tourmakeady's inspirational centre-half back Brendan Prendergast was honoured for an exceptional year, not his first either, with the Intermediate Player of the Year while, to complete the defensive sequence for the players of the year awards, Parke's centre-half back Tom Walsh was another man honoured for a great year with the Junior gong.
The full house signs were up at Knockranny House Hotel in Westport as the great and the good of Mayo club football turned out for the sixth annual Mayo News Club Stars, which has carved out a definite niche as one of the best night's in the Mayo sporting calendar.
There was intense competition for the fifteen places on the Club Stars team and the five replacements with thirty players nominated.
County champions Ballintubber topped the awards with five players on the team and one replacement. Castlebar Mitchels had five on the team as well while Knockmore had two players on the team and Intermediate champs Tourmakeady had two replacements.
Ballinrobe, Crossmolina and Breaffy had one player each in the team while Burrishoole and Charlestown had a player each among the replacements. See the full team below.
The top scorers in the Senior and Intermediate championship were honoured. Burrishoole's free-scoring corner-forward Jason Doherty scooped the Overall award at Intermediate while Cill Chomain's Derek Moran picked up the Top Scorer from Play award, helped by a great tally of 4-1 against Crossmolina B.
At Senior level there was no need for two awards as the top scorer from play was also the top scorer overall and that was Charlestown's Paul Mulligan, who won the award depsite his club being knocked out at the quarter-final stage.
New Mayo Manager James Horan was the deserving recipient of the Manager of the Year award after leading Ballintubber to an historic first ever Moclair Cup. Carnacon Ladies were recognised in the Special Achievement Award, their phenomenal record of 11 Mayo senior titles in a row deservedly highlighted.
Special guest on the night was Tyrone football star Peter Canavan and all the proceeds from the night will go to Cystic Fibrosis Mayo.
