Limerick native Christy Phillips takes over the reigns as manager of the Mayo Senior and U21 hurling sides for 2013 after recently being ratified by the Mayo GAA County Executive. Now based in Claremorris, Phillips served as a selector under previous manager Murt Connolly for the past two years - and takes over the post after Connolly finished his term in charge at the end of the 2012 season.
A strong management team has recently been completed with Ciaran Hynes, Coach (Westport), Austin Kenny, Selector (Tooreen) and Sean Malee, Physio (Kiltimagh) coming on board to form an experienced backroom department. The panel of players have recently completed a pre-season strength and conditioning program under the direction of Malee - with collective training having just commenced.
Mayo are based in Division 2B of the National Hurling League this year and begin their campaign on Sunday 24th of February at home to near neighbours Roscommon. They are also grouped with Meath, Armagh, London and Down in what is a difficult looking league schedule. The Christy Ring Cup campaign commences on Saturday 5th May - with Mayo being pitted against Kildare away in Newbridge. As part of their preparation, the Mayo management have lined up a challenge game against Leinster Club Champions Kilcormac-Killoughey of Offaly - who are currently preparing for their All-Ireland Club semi-final tilt against Thurles Sarsfields in February. Mayo are also scheduled to play a challenge game against NHL Division 3A side Donegal in the coming weeks.
The provisional panel of players currently undergoing training are: Donal O'Brien, Keith Higgins, Fergal Lyons, Luke Cribbin, Adrian Brennan, Stephen Hoban, Brian Hunt, Thaigh Morley (all Ballyhaunis), Ciaran Finn, Shane Morley, Gary Nolan, Kenny Feeney, Cathal Freeman, Greg Henry, Sean Markham, Ciaran Charlton, (all Tooreen), Adrian Guiry, Colin Staunton, Declan Gallagher (all Westport), David Horan, Barry Lane, Nathan O'Malley, Darren McTighe (Castlebar Mitchels), Paul O'Grady (James Stephens Ballina), Padraig O'Flynn, Pa Connell (both Castlegar) & Derek McDonnell (Belmullet).
