Mayo GAA summary update ahead of All-Ireland Football Qualifier against Monaghan
Mayo GAA confirms that Michael Plunkett from Ballintubber GAA, is out of contention and not available to James Horan and his selectors ahead of their opening game in Round 1 of the All-Ireland Football Qualifiers on June 4th. Speaking to www.mayogaa.com this week Mayo manager James Horan confirmed that several players picked up injuries since the Connacht GAA Championship game against Galway, but many were now returning to full training.
“We picked up a few bangs and knocks which is far from the ideal, but thankfully players are now returning to full training. The team is in good spirits and looking forward to the challenge ahead. Everyone is working hard in preparation for our next game,” Horan told www.mayogaa.com. Commenting on Monaghan, Horan said Seamus McEnaney’s team has lots of experience and has consistently played at a high level in Division 1. Monaghan is a good team and is formidable opposition,” commented Horan.
Mayo lost to Galway by a single point in the Connacht GAA Quarter-Final, scoring 0-16 to Galway’s 1-14. Mayo has already defeated Monaghan this year winning their Allianz National Football League encounter in Clones on February 6th, 2-10 to 0-11
“League games are different in that you are developing and giving new players a try so I wouldn’t read too much into it. The loss to Galway was a setback but we have dusted ourselves down, morale and belief are strong in the camp and training is going well. As a group, we are always looking at ways to improve and everyone is looking forward now to a battle with Monaghan. This is a great game for us, and we are doing everything in our power to be ready for June 4th,” Horan told www.mayogaa.com
Regarding the five-week layoff, Horan told www.mayogaa.com, that the break should not be a factor. “We have played several in-house games and the lads are all sharp and ready to go. We have had the opportunity to work on many things over the period. The belief is there, we know our strengths and we are always challenging and pushing each other for more. The lads are all looking forward now to putting in the best performance we can on Saturday week,” Horan told www.mayogaa.com.
