Rice College power past St. Attracta’s College

Rice College comprehensively defeated St. Attracta’s College (Tubbercurry) 2-25 to 2-03 in the opening round of the Flanagan Cup. Rice College were superb from start to finish and manager Shane Conway got to run his entire squad in this one-sided encounter. Ace Westport forward Andre Ludden stood out for Rice College and played an influential role scoring 1-05 over the hour. It took St. Attracta’s eighteen minutes to register their first score, a well worked goal from the boot of their corner forward. At this stage, Rice College had plenty of day light between the sides with exquisite points from Ludden, Simon Foy, Cian Grimes, Conal Gill and Donal Hastings. Ludden was the key player in attack for the Westport College hitting four great points in the first ten minutes. At the interval Rice College led 1-14 to 1-00 after a polished and powerful first thirty minutes of all out attacking play. Ludden also landed the Rice College goal after he latched onto a great pass to riffle to the back of the net midway through the half. The game was put to bed early in the second half when Rice College pounced for another major. Conor Cannon on this occasion reacting fastest, three minutes into the second half to slide the ball soccer style into the St. Attracta’s net. St. Attracta’s defended bravely from there to the finish but a much slicker and better organised Rice College side were in total control. Cian Grimes, Matthew Horan, Lorcan Silke and Cannon again all landed monster points in the second half for Rice College. St. Attracta’s fought to the bitter end and responded with a fortuitous goal and three points of their own in the closing stages. Rice College however, were home and hosed at this stage with outstanding performances in every line of the team. The west Mayo College could even afford to leave their Mayo GAA senior club stars Finbar McLaughlin and Kilmeena duo Conal Gill and Liam Moore on the bench for the afternoon. Despite kicking nine wides, Rice College manager Shane Conway will be delighted with the performance and especially the pool of talent at his disposal at present in the school.
